VEGVISIR:

A Practical Guide to Runic and Icelandic Magic

by Christopher Alan Smith

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Avalonia (June 8, 2022)

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 250 pages

List Price: $29.99

FROM THE PUBLISHER :

'Vegvísir' is the name of a famous Icelandic magical sign. It means 'signpost' or 'guide', and that is exactly what this book is. In this outstanding new volume, a follow-up to "Icelandic Magic: Aims, Tools and Techniques of the Icelandic Sorcerers" (Avalonia 2015), Christopher Alan Smith goes a step

further and teaches how to apply these techniques in your life for success, wealth, contentment, or whatever it is that you fervently wish for. Beginning with a devastating attack on the frivolities and anxieties of the modern world, he guides you, chapter by chapter, towards alignment with mythic

reality and the development of latent skills that you always had, but never realised.

Based on nearly 50 years of magical practice, and with an empathy born of experience, the author patiently encourages you to inherit the abilities that are yours by right, and challenges you to make use of these. There are many people in the world, all mortal. Will you be one of those who prove themselves somewhat more than mortal: the seed of the gods?

"Personally, I think of magic as the art and science of changing the Narrative. Narrative is not just a matter of idly telling stories; it is a powerful force in its own right, exerting itself through mythic reality, in ancient folktales, and in the story you tell yourself, day in, day out." - C.A. Smith in VEGVÍSIR

About the Author:

Christopher Alan Smith was born in Nottingham in 1954. He has travelled widely and lived in the Netherlands for five years, where his innate talent for languages enabled him to speak fluent Dutch within a few months and work as a logistics coordinator for a major transport company. His travels also include three visits to Iceland; on the second visit, he stayed in the country for 8 months and worked as a volunteer at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft in Hólmavík. Christopher's interest in magic began when he was a student at the University of Sheffield, at which time the main emphasis in the available literature was on the Western Tradition of Kabbalistic magic. However, his taste for travel, languages and a restless search for knowledge clearly indicated Woden as his example, leading him within a few years towards Rune Magic and ultimately to membership of the Rune Gild. His Fellowship Work for the Gild, The Icelandic Tradition of Magic was published in 2012 as part of the collection Occult Traditions (Numen Books). In 2014 he was awarded the title of Master in the Rune Gild for his Master-work Icelandic Magic in the Early Modern Period, which formed the basis of his first book, Icelandic Magic.Today he lives in North Yorkshire and, when not practising and researching Icelandic magic, works as a freelance translator.

WITCHES, DRUIDS AND SIN EATERS:

The Common Magic of the Cunning Folk of the Welsh Marches

By Jon G. Hughes, With Sophie Gallagher

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Destiny Books (September 20, 2022)

Publication date ‏ : ‎ September 20, 2022

List Price: $24.99

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Describes the arcane rituals, ancient beliefs, and secret rites of the Welsh Marches, including those of the Sin Eaters, Eye Biters, and Spirit Hunters

• Shares extracts from ancient texts stored in the archives of the National Museum of Wales, along with many original photographs of related artifacts

• Includes a Grimoire of the Welsh Marches, a wide collection of spells and magical workings along with practical instruction on crafting and casting

In this collaboration between a Druid and a witchcraft researcher, Jon G. Hughes and Sophie Gallagher describe in intricate detail the arcane rituals, ancient beliefs, and secret rites of the Welsh Marches, the borderlands between Celtic Wales and Anglo-Saxon England--one of the oldest and most significant locations for early witchcraft and a lasting repository for ancient Druidic lore. The authors explore the repressed rituals and practices of sin eaters, those who take upon themselves the sins of a recently deceased person; eye biters, powerful Witches able to cast malevolent curses simply by looking at their victims; and spirit hunters, Witches who gain control of their victim’s spirit. Drawing on their personal access to the archives of the National Museum Wales, as well as the local museums found within the Welsh Marches, the authors share extracts from ancient texts, along with original photographs of related artifacts, such as charm and spell bottles used to ward off evil and “poppets,” wax effigies crafted by Witches to inflict pain and death on a targeted subject. In the second half of the book, the authors present a Grimoire of the Welsh Marches, a wide collection of spells and magical workings along with practical instruction on crafting and casting.

Offering a comprehensive look at the earth-based beliefs and practices of primal witchcraft and Druidic lore, the authors show not only how the traditions of the Welsh Marches had a profound influence on the cultural and spiritual history of the British Isles but also how their influence was exported to all corners of the world.

About the Author:

Jon G. Hughes is part of a lineage of Druids that has been practicing for five generations in a remote area of Wales. The director of the Irish Centre for Druidic Practices and the author of several books, including The Druidic Art of Divination, he teaches workshops throughout Europe. He lives in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. Sophie Gallagher is a witchcraft researcher steeped in the ways of the ancient Witches of the Welsh Marches. Raised in rural Wales, in the very center of the Welsh Marches, she now lives in Devon, England, close to the ancient moors of Dartmoor.

KING SOLOMON THE MAGUS:

Master of the Djinns and Occult Traditions of East and West

by Claude Lecouteux

Publisher : ‎ Inner Traditions (September 27, 2022)

Language: ‎ English

Hardcover: ‎ 288 pages

List Price: $35.00

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Explores the schools of Solomonic magic around the world and works such as The Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomon the King and The Hygromancy of Solomon

• Examines Solomon’s magical possessions, including his famous ring that gave him command over animals, weather, demons, genies, and djinns, as well as his amulets, remedies, exorcisms, and charms

• Looks at the extensive presence of Solomon in folklore around the world, including in Armenia, Malaysia, Russia, Bulgaria, Morocco, India, and Egypt

Looking at the Solomonic magical tradition and Solomon’s profound influence on esoteric traditions around the world, Claude Lecouteux reveals King Solomon not only as one of the great kings of prehistory but also as the ancient world’s foremost magician and magus. Examining the primary sources on Solomon, such as the Bible, the Koran, and the writings of Flavius Josephus, the author explores Solomon’s judgments, his explorations, his literary and scientific works (including an herbal), and his constructions beyond the eponymous temple, such as the copper city in Andalus built by the djinns and the baths of Sulayman. He also looks at Solomon’s magical possessions, such as his famous ring and the Philosopher’s Stone. The author examines the supernatural powers granted to Solomon by his ring, which he received from the angel Gabriel, including command over animals, weather, and demons, and explores in detail Solomon’s power over genies and djinns.

Following the esoteric threads hidden within the primary sources on Solomon, Lecouteux reveals the work of Solomon the Magician, exploring his amulets, remedies, exorcisms, charms, and his influence on Arab and Western magic. Providing illustrations of sigils, talismans, and other magic symbols related to Solomon, the author examines the schools of Solomonic Folkloremagic and works such as The Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomon the King and The Hygromancy of Solomon. He then looks at the extensive presence of Solomon in folklore worldwide, including in Armenia, Israel, Malaysia, Eastern Europe, Russia, Morocco, India, Mongolia, and among the Abyssinians of Ethiopia and the Copts in Egypt. He also looks at Solomon’s role within the Bulgarian tradition from which the Cathars derived.

Painting an in-depth portrait of Solomon the Magician-King, Lecouteux reveals how this legendary magus left a deep impression upon the occult, magical traditions, and philosophies of the ancient world that can still be felt to this day.

Review:

“In this splendid compendium, Claude Lecouteux brings together stories, folktales, lore, and legends associated with the Biblical King Solomon. King of ancient Israel, he founded castles and cities as well as a palace of glass and his most famous Temple in Jerusalem. Solomon’s legacy spread across the Middle East into Europe, Africa, and beyond. Reputed author of one thousand and five books of poems, psalms, and songs and three thousand parables, he also interacted with animals, whose languages he understood. Solomon was one of the great historical practitioners of magic. Solomon’s seal and ring gave him power over various kinds of spirits. All his possessions--his net, his throne, and his chalice among them--were infused with magical power. Claude Lecouteux’s masterly reconstruction of the wondrous world of King Solomon from ancient documents is by far the most comprehensive survey yet published of the many different aspects of this ancient and influential monarch.” ― Nigel Pennick, author of The Ancestral Power of Amulets, Talismans, and Mascots and Elemental Magic
