BRIGID'S LIGHT:

Tending the Ancestral Flame

of the Beloved Celtic Goddess

by Cairelle Crow  (Editor), Laura Louella (Editor), Judika Illes (Foreword)

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Weiser Books (March 1, 2022)

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 256 pages

List Price: $19.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Welcome to Brigid’s Light, an anthology dedicated to the Celtic goddess Brigid, edited by Cairelle Crow and Laura Louella. Foreword by Judika Illes. With contributions from Amy Blackthorn, Annwyn Avalon, H. Byron Ballard, Laura Tempest Zakroff, Mary-Grace Fahrun, Raven Morgaine, Courtney Weber and many other leading figures of the Pagan community.

Who is the Goddess Brigid?

Brigid is a shapeshifter.

As a goddess, she takes many forms: as a woman of various ages from girl to crone, as a serpent, as a pillar of fire, and as a woman with flames emanating from her head. Sometimes she appears as a single being, but she may also take the form of a triplicity, or as three sisters. Brigid seems able to take on the spiritual characteristics most needed and most accessible to her devotees.

Brigid's Cross:

A Goddess by Any Other Name . . .

A variety of cultural, religious, and historical influences have created many different spellings of Brigid’s name including Brigit, Brighde, Bridget, Brighid, Brigida, Brijit, Brig, Bride, Ffraid, Breet, Brigdu, Bhrida, Brigitte, Brid, Birgitta, Breeshey, and others. She is also known as Mary of the Gael. All are correct.

Since the revelation of our own mutual devotion to Brigid, we’ve had many conversations about her history, her mysteries, and her presence in our lives. Unsurprisingly, we are quite aligned in our beliefs and practices. Within our own personal gnosis, Brigid is a triad of sisters—the Sacred Three—with hints of Saint Brigid’s legends and miracles threading through the tapestry of our experiences. Brigid is Goddess of the Flame, liminal, born on a threshold at the moment of dawn with fire bursting forth from her head like a halo. She stands with us at the in-between points of our lives, calling us to her so we can learn how to face the moment. She encourages us to look deeply into who we are as women, mothers, friends, and priestesses. She enables us to take stock of where we are and where we are going. By her light, we find our way.

For us, Brigid is a mother goddess embodied in the land and rivers through which she flows, offering her sacred milk as sustenance for our souls. As Lady of the Well, she blesses us with her healing grace throughout our lives, from birth to death. She inspires us and causes our ideas to flow and manifest into beautiful works. She teaches us to speak our truths, and with our words we are empowered. We look to her as a warrior goddess as well—one who stands when it would be easier to sit, who embodies strength and defends the weak and downtrodden, who faces authority and claims the sovereignty that has always been hers.

FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK:

Stories, spells, rituals, and recipes celebrating the worldwide influence of this beloved Celtic goddess, with contributions from Amy Blackthorn, Laura Tempest Zakroff, Courtney Weber, and many others

This anthology celebrates Brigid, an ancient and mysterious Celtic spirit who ranks among today’s most popular modern goddesses. Venerated in many forms including as a saint and a goddess, Brigid has traveled the globe alongside the Celtic diaspora. Once a goddess with a narrow territory, she is now an internationally beloved presence. While acknowledging her origins, this book also explores Brigid from the perspective of those outside her original Celtic homeland.

Editors Cairelle Crow and Laura Louella have gathered art, poetry, stories, spells, rituals, recipes, and traditions as an homage to the worldwide influence of Brigid’s magic and lore, especially among the descendants of immigrants to the Americas. In compiling these individual works, Cairelle and Laura have given voice to those traveling ancestors by showcasing a rich and beautiful heritage manifested through embodiments of devotion by their descendants, as well as others touched by Brigid.

REVIEWS:

“This is the book all Brigid devotees and enthusiasts have been dreaming about. Brigid's Light is a bubbling cauldron of wisdom and inspiration, and it absolutely belongs on your shelf. I'm sure I'll be coming back to this one for decades to come.”  -- Tess Whitehurst, author of You Are Magical and Holistic Energy Magic

“Introducing us to the beloved goddess Brigid in her different guises, Brigid’s Light is a truly special, appropriately illuminating and richly diverse collection of writings from some of the most respected figures in contemporary witchcraft and spirituality. Trusted hands - including those of Judika Illes and Byron Ballard - shine a light on the many facets of this ever-inspirational Celtic deity, guiding us into her realm through the medium of spells, poetry, recipes, crafting, personal reflections, rituals, and much more besides. This sparkling anthology is a gift, both to Brigid, and to the reader. Nurture your inner fire with this book, and tune in to Brigid’s bright energy, not only at Imbolc, but all the year round.”  -- Zoë Howe, author of Witchful Thinking: The Wise Woman’s Handbook To Creating A Charmed Life

“Brigid was the first goddess that had a direct impact on how my life unfolded. I can also see her light and her hand at work throughout the world in many individuals and communities today.  Brigid’s Light: Tending the Ancestral Flame of the Beloved Celtic Goddess is more than an excellent anthology; it is an act of healing and the creation of a community of practice. Divine beings are vast and beyond the comprehension of any single human being. However, when you bring together the thoughts, experiences, and insight of many people, such as is present in this book, you begin to get a glimmer of Brigid’s majesty and her nature. If you are called by her, you will find both confirmation and challenges in this book, and that is her way.”  -- Ivo Dominguez Jr., author of The Four Elements of the Wise

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Cairelle Crow has walked a goddess path for more than thirty years, exploring, learning, and growing. As seekers and practitioners reclaim and restore magic to its rightful place among powerful forces for social, personal, and political transformation, more people than ever are claiming the identity of "Witch." BLACKTHORN'S PROTECTION MAGIC:

A Witch’s Guide to Mental and Physical Self-Defense

by Amy Blackthorn

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Weiser Books (March 1, 2022)

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 208 pages

List Price: $16.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

A hands-on guide to protection magic using essential oils, incense, spells, and tarot from a beloved and trusted authority.

Blackthorn's Protection Magic guides readers through the realm of the green witch to a glade filled with options for your protection. Amy Blackthorn discusses spiritual, emotional, and physical security in an easy-to-understand way. The book provides an overview of what protection means to witches and then explores practices in more depth, including:

Essential oils for protection magic

The role plant allies play in both protecting and healing

What tarot can teach us about our strengths and weaknesses

Oracle spell work as a potent source of protection

As a witch who has worked in executive security for nearly fifteen years, Amy possesses the botanical spirit of an animist witch, able to see the inherent spirit in plants, as well as a keen eye on ways to make a home feel safer and more secure, on the magical and the mundane levels. For example, holly trees provide magical protection from lightning, but also make a prickly barrier outside the home to keep burglars from lurking in the shadows.

EXCERPT:

Psychic Protection and Purification

Amethyst—This gorgeous purple stone is aligned with psychic protection as it incorporates the energy of the third eye (the theoretical seat of psychic power) as well as beneficial shielding properties.

Sage (Salvia officinalis), a.k.a. garden sage, may be related to the white sage grown in the desert, but this grow-it-yourself replacement doesn’t take away from Indigenous peoples’ practice. The Salvia family has nearly a thousand genera (the plural of genus) including Salvia rosmarinus (rosemary, formerly Rosmarinus officinalis).

Tarot Spells for Protection

These cards can be used by themselves, or in combination with other materials to achieve a personalized protection visualization. The images described are from the Smith-Rider-Waite and are commonly used as the Tarot deck in the majority of Tarot learning books and websites, so they will apply to traditionally styled Tarot decks, but feel free to substitute your favorite Tarot deck in your visualization. Remember, when you’re using the imagery of the Tarot in your magic, you are not just holding a card. You are holding the magical lineage of every person who has looked to these cards for answers, control of their lives, and a better circumstance.

Essential Oils for Protection

Creating protection perfumes, diffuser blends, and more from essential oils is a great way to utilize active protective qualities of plants and also reinforce the qualities of your own personal witchcraft aims. First, we need to break down what you want to protect, and why you want to protect it. Clarity in your purpose is also helpful. Protecting your income stream is going to look differently than protecting your child as they go off to school. There are so many plants that are associated with general protection and that it can be intimidating. That’s okay, you don’t need to use all of them, or even that many. One or two will give your working the flavor of protection that you need for it to be effective.

Each day of the week has particular attributes. Here are Monday's:

Monday (Moon)—Protection magic involving the moon is the nurturing protection of a mother’s love. It protects your inner self who is vulnerable to the slings and arrows of people who don’t know the harm in their words. The moon can protect your psyche and your intuitive traits, so if you have been plagued by doubt regarding your intuitive abilities or feel that your psychic senses are vulnerable to attack, do a working on the Moon’s day, Monday. To protect your health, work preventative magic on a Monday, as healing is associated with Artemis/ Diana.

HOODOO FOR BEGINNERS

An Introduction to African American Folk Magic

by Clara Robinson

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Creek Ridge Publishing (May 12, 2021)

Language ‏ : ‎ English

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 78 pages

List Price: $9.99

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

There are many benefits to the practice of hoodoo and how it is used to influence the human condition

As much as it has been used in popular culture as a horror aesthetic, it has also in recent years become a light, illuminating the living practice of African American folk religion. Hoodoo itself developed as a combination of beliefs from different African cultures. African slaves united their beliefs and cultures after being brought to America in an attempt to go back to their own roots, to rekindle the flame of their home cultures, and thus hoodoo was born. Hoodoo was used as both a spiritual and physical tool for survival. African slaves were very unlikely to get proper medical attention, and so they had to look after their own with the use of the botanical knowledge that they had at their disposal in order to keep themselves balanced and healthy. Traditional hoodoo practices were preserved orally by those enslaved in order to ensure that practices were not lost, as many of those enslaved did not always have many earthly possessions. These practices have survived to the present day, despite the belief that it is used only in late seventeenth-century midnight seances.

Inside this book you will discover!

  • Where to Begin: Crossroads, Ancestors, Graveyards, and Spiritual Cleansing

  • Rootwork

  • Candle Magic and Oils

  • The First Steps to Your Own Mojo Bags

And Much More!!
