A Modern-Day Book of Shadows for Positive Witches

by Marion Weinstein, Steven Hanes (Foreword)

Publisher : Weiser Books (February 1, 2021)

Language : English

Paperback : 240 pages

List Price: $16.95

A classic of practical magic that presents witchcraft as a life-affirming spiritual path―from one of the grand dames of witchcraft.

Marion Weinstein was one of the founders of modern-day witchcraft. Personal Magic is her book of shadows, what they used to call a grimoire or book of spells. It presents her personal approach to witchcraft, what she learned over her many decades of practicing magic:

  • How to invoke the deities or spirit powers, the gods and goddesses that inhabit our world
  • The pagan holidays―what they mean and how to honor them
  • Working with moon power throughout its phases
  • The witch’s toolkit of spells and rituals for contacting one’s ancestors, seeking protection from malevolent forces, and practicing advanced manifestation
  • An exploration of the principles of self-realization through witchcraft

In the old days,” she writes, “a ‘Book of Shadows’ was kept for joyful reasons―to pass on the work to others. Every witch who could write had one.” During times of repression, these works were a way of preserving the religion. “Today, we are back to the original purpose of sharing the craft with others.” This book is Marion’s gift to you. It is also an invitation to start creating your own book of shadows.

Personal Magic is filled with how-tos and practical advice that shows readers how to unlock their psychic abilities to guide them in the creation of their own unique and personal magical work. Every technique is explained in detail, in keeping with Weinstein's proviso that one should never attempt to work any magic unless one understands it fully.

About the Author:

Marion Weinstein (1939–2009) was an author, teacher, media personality, and proud New York "city witch." Known as "The Ethics Witch," she is one of the founders of the modern witchcraft movement. She was the first to coin the phrase and define Positive Magic, and clearly delineate its use. Her radio show, Marion's Cauldron, was the first regularly scheduled Wiccan and psychic programming on record, and was a New York phenomenon for fourteen years.

Skill Building with the Whole Deck

If you find yourself experiencing any kind of clairvoyant or psychic happening as you go along, don’t try to fight it, but allow it to happen. You may literally see a situation in your mind’s eye or you may get a strong impression about something that is occurring in the Questioner’s life. When this happens, just go with the flow and allow anything that you feel is right to come out and be acknowledged.

Use your imagination.
You may feel on occasion that you are simply making up a fairy tale rather than giving a reading, but don’t be put off by this feeling, as you will find to your surprise that your story will ring true to your Questioner.

Don’t try to predict the future.
Concentrate on picking up the Questioner’s present situation. If the reading begins to drift into the future as you go along, that’s great, but don’t aim for it. Check your findings after the reading by asking your Questioner for some feedback.

Remember that your definition of any card is always the right one.
You may begin to deviate from the standard Tarot interpretations as your readings progress. If a particular card or an accumulation of cards begins to mean something different to you than it does to everyone else, that is a good thing.

Examples to Try for Yourself

Here we find two Major Arcana cards and two Sword cards. The immediate impression is that this reading refers to something important, because the presence of more than one Major card in such a small spread suggests that the hand of fate is very strongly involved here.

Here we have two Major Arcana cards that, linked together, suggest a change in relationships. The Wheel suggests change and The Lovers suggests choices that are concerned with our relationship to others. There are two Sword cards that suggest important decisions that must be taken by the Questioner. The Ace of Swords puts power in the hands of the Questioner. The Wheel suggests change while the Six of Swords denotes movement. The Lovers may indicate a new companion. Swords suggest serious matters while The Lovers suggest choices to be made.

Now go back and look at that list again and see what you can make of it for yourself.

Tarot Reading as a Profession

Some of you reading this book may be contemplating the possibility of becoming a professional Tarot Reader. This may be because you fancy the idea, or because you have been reading cards for your friends for a long time and are now being asked by strangers if you would read for them. You may decide to take up a career as a Reader because you are short of money and on the lookout for some additional form of income, or there may be any one of a number of other reasons. The first point I would like to make here is that it’s perfectly all right to offer Tarot readings in exchange for money—you won’t be punished by some kind of unseen force for doing so. However, for the sake of both your clients and yourself, you must know what you are doing, so therefore do make sure that you are as confident as possible in your reading skills and that you can cope with the people and the problems with which you will be faced. It might be helpful to take a course in counseling techniques, even if you don’t actually use these during your readings, and it’s always worth visiting a few other Readers to see how they go about things.

If the cards suggest that the present is all right but that there will be problems in the future, be very positive and suggest ways in which the Questioner can best handle things. Be reasonably honest, but don’t leave your Questioner feeling hopeless. A health warning may save someone’s life, but undue stress and worry can kill. Always take care and think about what you tell the client. If your Questioner is neurotic and negative by nature, it may be better to avoid the worst of the bad news, as this can prey on his or her mind and even turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

While we must take the client’s point of view into consideration, we have to leave our own outside the door and look at each client as no more than a human being who wants help and advice at that particular moment. If you become a professional Reader, you will find yourself dealing with people from every part of the world and every possible culture and walk of life. Some of these people will be on your own personal wavelength, many of them won’t, but each client’s money is as good as the next and each needs a sensible and unbiased reading.
