SPLENDOR SOLIS:
The World's Most Famous Alchemical Manuscript
by Dr. Stephen Skinner, Dr Rafal T. Prinke, Georgiana Hedesan, Joscelyn Godwin
Hardcover: 176 pages
Publisher: Watkins Publishing (March 19, 2019)
List Price: $33.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
The only high-quality yet affordable edition available of the classic alchemical manuscript Splendor Solis, described as "the most magnificent treatise on alchemy ever made". Includes up-to-date commentary from experts in the field and a modern translation of the 16th-century text.

A magnificent edition of the Splendor Solis for all those interested in alchemy, magic and mysterious manuscripts. Popularly attributed to the legendary figure Salomon Trismosin, the Splendor Solis ('Splendour of the Sun') is the most beautiful alchemical manuscript ever made, with 22 fabulous illustrations rich in allegorical and mystical symbolism. The paintings are given a fitting showcase in this new Watkins edition, which accompanies them with Joscelyn Godwin's excellent contemporary translation of the original 16th-century German text, as well as interpretation from alchemical experts Stephen Skinner and Georgiana Hedesan, and from Rafal T. Prinke, an authority in central and Eastern European esoteric manuscripts. Stephen Skinner explains the symbolism of both the text and the illustrations, suggesting that together they describe the physical process of the alchemical transmutation of base metal into gold. Rafal T. Prinke explains the theories about the authorship of both text and illustrations, discussing Splendor Solis as the turning point in alchemical iconography passing from the medieval tradition to that of the Baroque and the reasons for the misattribution of Splendor Solis to Poysel and Trismosin. Georgiana Hedesan looks at the legendary figure of Salomon Trismosin and his creation by followers of Theophrastus Paracelsus as part of an attempt to integrate their master in a lineage of ancient alchemical philosophers. The images are taken from the British Library manuscript Harley 3469, the finest example of the Splendor Solis to survive.

BEYOND THE NORTH WIND:
The Fall and Rise of the Mystic North
by Christopher McIntosh, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson (Foreword)
Paperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Weiser Books (May 1, 2019)
List Price: $18.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
"The North" is simultaneously a location, a direction, and a mystical concept. Although this concept has ancient roots in mythology, folklore, and fairy tales, it continues to resonate today within modern culture. McIntosh leads readers, chapter by chapter, through the magical and spiritual history of the North, as well as its modern manifestations, as documented through physical records, such as runestones and megaliths, but also through mythology and lore.

This mythic conception of a unique, powerful, and mysterious Northern civilization was known to the Greeks as "Hyberborea"--the "Land Beyond the North Wind"--which they considered to be the true origin place of their god, Apollo, bringer of civilization. Through the Greeks, this concept of the mythic North would spread throughout Western civilization.

In addition, McIntosh discusses Russian Hyperboreanism, which he describes as among "the most influential of the new religions and quasi-religious movements that have sprung up in Russia since the fall of Communism" and which is currently almost unknown in the West.

BECOMING DANGEROUS:
Witchy Femmes, Queer Conjurers, and Magical Rebels
by Katie West (Editor), Jasmine Elliott (Editor), Kristen J. Sollée (Foreword)
Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: Weiser Books (April 1, 2019)
List Price: $16.25

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
"A fierce and voluble refutation of the patriarchy and its soul-crushing oppression of female power. These writers make clear that as witches, femmes, and queers, they will use their own strength, ingenious rituals, beauty routines, and spells to rise above and beyond the limits of racism/classism and objectifications set by a male-dominated society. While bound by a thread of magic, these are inspiring feminist writings for readers of feminist literature, however identified.” --Library Journal

Edgy and often deeply personal, the twenty-one essays collected here come from a wide variety of writers. Some identify as witches, others identify as writers, musicians, game developers, or artists. What they have in common is that they’ve created personal rituals to summon their own power in a world that would prefer them powerless. Here, they share the rituals they use to resist self-doubt, grief, and depression in the face of sexism, slut shaming, racism, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression.

Reviews:

"This isn't a book on how to become a witch. Rather, it's a book about what it means to be a witch, written by women and femmes for whom the word "witch" is as much a part of their identity as their skin, their sexuality, and their gender. Ultimately, though, this is a book about magic, real, operant magic, the kind which changes reality. It's a book about where that magic comes from, and how queer women and femmes, women of color, and trans women have used it since the dawn of humanity to survive in a world which would just as soon have them enslaved or dead." --Misha Magdalene, Patheos

"Whether harnessing the power of nature, tarot, crystals and candles or selfies, make up, video games and sex toys, these rebels, sluts, femmes, and witches heal from trauma, challenge institutional racism, dismantle misogyny, and create community. Replete with prose that is at turns revealing, relatable, and bitingly funny, this book lays the groundwork for summoning your own salvation on your own terms." --Kristen J. Sollée, author of Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive

"In this uneven yet bold collection of essays, 21 authors explore how they “resist the onslaught of a world of irrational happenings” by performing personal rituals that incorporate magic. Each essay is by someone who considers themselves marginalized and responding to a culture that “has attempted to cast a banishing spell” on them. Highlights include “Trash Magic” by Miranda Elizabeth, a self-described “sick mad crip borderline witch” who tweaks tarot readings and crystal rituals to suit the needs of her “disabled perspective” and Avery Edison’s “Before I Was a Woman, I Was a Witch,” which details Avery’s discovery of a witch kit as a teenager. A common thread is the subversion of conventional feminine beauty, such as in Catherine Hernandez’s “Femme as in Fuck You” in which she writes of taking intentionally ugly photos to reclaim her sense of beauty after an accident that left her scarred, and merritt k’s “Total Mood Killer,” about how she fashions her nails for peak scariness, “sharp enough to easily scratch skin—maybe draw blood.” Powerfully intimate and angry yet hopeful, these narratives will appeal to “magickal practitioners” looking for new examples of how others have dealt with oppression." --Publishers Weekly, (Apr 2019)

Thoughtful and earnest, considered together these essays weave a spell, taking the acts of women deemed selfish and silly and naming them sacred. Witches are having a moment. And it’s about damn time.” —Kelly Sue DeConnick, Bitch Planet and Pretty Deadly

Becoming Dangerous is an essential survival guide for underrepresented communities who still have to fight for visibility in these so-called modern times.” —Alison Nastasi, Flavorwire.com

Witchcraft specifically is appealing to the marginalized because witchcraft focuses on how the self and the earth are connected. It takes societal hierarchy out of the equation. . . . The contributors to Becoming Dangerous are a multi-faceted group of individuals and writers who have all found their power through dealing with personal hardship and establishing magical rituals. Their rituals vary from using fashion to combat societal sexualization, to buzzing off their hair to explore presentation and identity, and using special rituals to prove to the world that they are human and not less than. This new collection of essays about ‘ritual and resistance’ will fire you up and make you feel powerful.” —HelloGiggles.com

"This essay collection describes the many ways that women, femmes, and nonbinary people find and create safe places as acts of resistance, beauty, and hope. Editors Katie West and Jasmine Elliott curated a magnificent collection that includes authors of many different backgrounds, abilities, identities, cultures, and beliefs. Becoming Dangerous debates with itself, answers its own questions, and provides a powerful look at how magic and intention can turn the tide of self-doubt and empower women, as it has for centuries, in both public and secret practices." –Foreword Reviews

In essay after essay, the reckoning is a fierce and voluble refutation of the patriarchy and its soul-crushing oppression of female power. These writers make clear that as witches, femmes, and queers, they will use their own strength, ingenious rituals, beauty routines, and spells to rise above and beyond the limits of racism/classism and objectifications set by a male-dominated society. QUEERING THE TAROT
by Cassandra Snow (Author), Beth Maiden (Foreword)
Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Weiser Books (May 1, 2019)
List Price: $14.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Tarot is best used as a tool for self-discovery, healing, growth, empowerment, and liberation. Tarot archetypes provide the reader with a window into present circumstances and future potential. But what if that window only opened up on a world that was white, European, and heterosexual? The interpretations of the tarot that have been passed down through tradition presuppose a commonality and normalcy among humanity. At the root of card meanings are archetypes that we accept without questioning. But at what point do archetypes become stereotypes?

Humanity is diverse--culturally, spiritually, sexually. Tarot has the power to serve a greater population, with the right keys to unlock the tarot's deeper meanings. In Queering the Tarot, Cassandra Snow deconstructs the meanings of the 78 cards explaining the ways in which each card might be interpreted against the norm. Queering the Tarot explores themes of sexuality, coming out, gender and gender-queering, sources of oppression and empowerment, and many other topics especially familiar to not-straight folks. Cassandra's identity-based approach speaks directly to those whose identity is either up in the air or consuming the forefront of their consciousness. It also speaks to those struggling with mental illness or the effects of trauma, all seekers looking for personal affirmation that who they are is okay.

~

Why is it that queer folks are so drawn to the tarot and other witchy, magical, or esoteric practices?

'To a world that categorizes us as nonnormative, we say, 'Your loss! We’ll build our own communities, economies, and structures of care right over here.' Picking up affordable, accessible practices like tarot, astrology, and herbalism—folk tools that to the capitalist white heteropatriarchy are useless because they can’t be neatly explained, co-opted, and sold—is part of this radical community-building process. We use tarot to better understand and care for ourselves and our communities. Queering the Tarot is a brilliant contribution to this collective work. Cassandra’s interpretations zoom in on the generally accepted meanings of each card, examining timeworn archetypes, symbols, tropes, and rites of passage via one simple yet crucial question:

How can this card relate differently for queer-identified readers?

The asking is itself a radical act. It is a question that makes space for difference. It is a question that centers the marginal, the unseen, and makes it visible.' –Beth Maiden

Word
In this book I use the acronym LGBTQQIP2SA+, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Pansexual, Two-Spirit, Asexual, and anyone else who identifies as not straight, not cisgender, or both. The + is divisive, and I do recognize that not everyone likes their inclusion seeming like an afterthought. I see you, I hear you, and I’m always looking for more inclusive solutions. Please know that I consider anyone who is not both straight and cisgender a Q, as in Queer. You’re already under the umbrella and celebrating our queerness with us in my eyes. I also know that the word Queer isn’t comfortable or right for everyone. This is a word that originally just meant odd (another label I happily claim) but, over time, became a slur lobbed at those who were—or were perceived as—something other than straight, cisgender, or both. Over the past several years, our community has done some brilliant work reclaiming this word that once put us in a limiting box.

Strength
Strength is a card that frustrates many readers and querents at times because we want it to be more complicated than it is. Most cards have multiple meanings, or the word signifying the card is only a starting point. This isn’t necessarily true of Strength. There are multiple definitions of strength depending on whom you ask, and that accounts for much of the differentiation in this card between decks. This card could show up as a simple call to wield strength through adversity or quarrels. It could pop up as a reminder that you are strong and can get through anything. I most often see the card as a call to find balance between force and gentle compassion. The most common image on a Strength card is a woman taming a lion through physical affection, which is a lot of what strengthens that latter message.

Reviews:
Queering the Tarot was a feature on the Little Red Tarot blog. Taking the tarot cards that we all love, and peeling them back to their bones. From there, Cassandra Snow builds the cards a new form. One that speaks to everyone regardless of their gender identity, sexuality or gender expression. I have seen queer tarot cards save people's lives. I have seen the impact that diversity and representation have in my community. I am delighted that this book exists, and encourage everyone - queer, straight or otherwise -- to pick it up.” —Melissa Cynova, author of Kitchen Table Tarot

Learning to apply the wisdom embedded in each tarot card to specific situations is always challenge. The challenge is heightened when your lifestyle may not be considered mainstream. Cassandra Snow leads us on a journey through the tarot that explores, acknowledges, and honors, the experiences of non-straight and/or non-cisgendered folks. Her insights are valuable for both queer readers and for readers with queer clients.” --Barbara Moore, author of Steampunk Tarot, Llewellyn’s Classic Tarot, Your Tarot Your Way, www.tarotshaman.com

"In Queering the Tarot, Cassandra Snow opens up the world of tarot and makes it inclusive for the LGBTQ community and other marginalized folk. I think this may be one of the most important tarot books out today. It gives much needed representation and respect to a whole slice of the population that has been left out due to tarot’s tendency to focus on white, cisgender, heteronormative. Queering the Tarot is a wonderful book who’s time has come. It belongs on every serious tarot reader’s shelf." —Theresa Reed, author of The Tarot Coloring Book and co-author of Tarot For Troubled Times

"Queering the Tarot doesn't just bring the Tarot out of the closet. It dresses it up in drag (both queen and king) to show it off. This is a book that isn't afraid to challenge the binary gender paradigm from all angles. It doesn't matter if you are queer, straight, or somewhere else on the spectrum because Cassandra Snow unflinchingly casts aside the heteronormative dialogue to reveal a rich, nuanced view of this divinatory art. I was pleased to see the Urban Tarot used in the images as well. It is the perfect "gender-queer" deck for this book. It is truly a keeper for anyone who wishes to broaden their Tarot practice personally. I think it should be required for all professionals who want to be in touch and in tune with our diverse, beautiful population." --Arwen Lynch-Poe, Editor/Publisher at The Cartomancer

"Queering the Tarot is an indispensable book in the modern re-workings of the 600-year-old images, symbols, and stories--indispensable not just for LGBTQQIPA2P+ people, but for anyone who wants to see how the Tarot can expand and open to the world.”--Rachel Pollack, author of Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom

"As a straight, middle-class Baby Boomer, I admit to being slightly uncomfortable with the word “queer”. It is also true that I have made up my mind not to die of mental rigidity. So a few years back, I began consciously trying on other people’s perspectives and I have come to understand that the LBGTQ+ community speaks the word clearly as a powerful badge of honor. For the moment, as Beth Maiden points out in her brilliant foreword to this book, the queer experience is substantially different from the hetero experience. Both from that perspective, and from the perspective of a long time student of all things tarot, I herald the release of this book and the new dimensions that it adds to the magical symbolism of the cards. In the page-and-a-half “Word” that follows Maiden’s “Foreword”, Cassandra Snow says that the word “queer” has come to mean the intention to create a community where “others” (all those who need a safer space) are welcomed with open arms. I can think of no better definition of the symbolism of the tarot. Snow is asking The Fool to “walk in another man’s shoes” along the path to enlightenment. The lessons learned are invaluable." --Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insights, May/June 2019

About the Authors:
Cassandra Snow is a professional tarot card reader who teaches Queering the Tarot and Tarot for Beginners classes and coaches new and intermediate readers. She also runs Gadfly Theatre Productions, a queer and feminist theater company. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Beth Maiden is the founder of Little Red Tarot.
