WATER WITCHCRAFT:
Magic and Lore from the Celtic Tradition
by Annwyn Avalon , Skye Alexander (Foreword)
Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Weiser Books (March 1, 2019)
List Price: $16.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
An accessible in-depth guide to Celtic water lore, including spells, rituals, water spirits, and merfolk

Let Annwyn Avalon, a practicing water witch herself, take you into the world of water magic. The water magic and lore in this book focuses on the Celtic tradition, but draws on other water magic traditions as well, and features rainwater, as well as lakes, rivers, oceans, canals, swamps, and other watery locations, together with the folk and magical customs that have been and are still practiced at these places. The book teaches the reader how to set up a water altar at home, how to connect with water spirits, and how to gather or create water witch tools. Readers are encouraged to visit local water sites but will also find an abundance of material to perform at home. Included are practical examples, visualizations, and exercises so any reader can start to take up spell work and establish their spiritual connection to water.

~We Long to Be in the Water
As far back as we can remember, humans have been intimately connected with water, both physically and spiritually. We associate it with deities, spirits, souls, and creatures of other realms who find their homes in or near bodies of water that are often the setting for supernatural occurrences. We work with water in a sacred manner for our lives, for our children’s lives, and for the lives of the deities and spirits we find there. Throughout history, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of named water deities and spirits—and just as many obscure and unnamed ones— have appeared in myth and legend, and folklore is full of tales of magic wells, talking wells, water nymphs, great sea gods, and more.

From the Foreword by Skye Alexander:
At this crucial time, when we’re experiencing massive pollution of the world’s waters, and when human-induced climate change threatens our seacoasts, marine life, and future generations, Annwyn’s call to honor the spirits of the waters rings loud and true. Immersing yourself in this intriguing and informative book will give you a greater appreciation for the life-giving water from which we originated and on which we depend for our continued existence.

Each section includes exercises for the specific type of water magic.
Other areas covered include:
  • Water Altars and Shrines
  • Tools for Water Witches
  • Sea Spells and Charms
  • Water Animals
  • Comb Magic

Sacred Water Blessing
Select your sacred water and pour it into your sacred vessel. Once the water is in the bowl, gather your fresh herb bundle, wand, feather, or other implement. If you want to say a blessing, prayer, or incantation, now is a great time. As you do so, project it into the water. When you are ready, dip the herbs into the bowl and fling the water in the target’s direction, saying:

I cleanse this space
With sacred love and grace.
I banish all bane from this place
With the power of river, lake, and sea.
This is my will; So mote it be!

Four Types of Water Witches
River Witches
The direction in which a river or stream flowed often determined its magical properties. Water that flowed toward the sun was believed to have both healing and blessing properties. A stream formed from seasonal runoff in the month of March was considered lucky, and water gathered there was used in luck charms and spells.

Lake Witches
Lake water can be used to exorcise baneful enchantments, illness, and spirits. The possibilities are endless. The most important thing to remember about lake water is that it can be used for many things, especially sympathetic magic; like attracts like!

Marsh Witches
Witches who work in this environment find value in the medicine of shed snake skins, bones, and eggs, as well as all manner of teeth, spiders, and feathers. The water with which they connect and from which they draw their powers is dark and murky green, and filled with lurking serpents and poisonous creatures.

Sea Witches
Sea witches have a long-standing reputation for lurking upon the shores, selling charms, calling up storms, and sinking ships. Some sea witches—especially those from stories collected from the New World and into the 19th century—were reported to wear red shoes. In fact, this was believed to be a sure sign of a witch.

SISTER KAROL'S BOOK OF SPELLS, BLESSINGS & FOLK MAGIC
by Karol Jackowski
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Weiser Books (March 1, 2019)
List Price: $16.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
A guide to folk magic from diverse spiritual traditions ranging from Catholicism to Wicca and more~

Anyone seeking to mend a broken heart, turn enemies into friends, or find a guardian angel will find encouragement in this uplifting, inspiring, and entertaining book. Author Karol Jackowski introduces, explains, and explores the nature of spells, prayers, and blessings and offers practical suggestions for their use. Readers will learn how to cast spells, create altar space, and most crucially how to live their best spiritual and magical lives.

Karol draws from a variety of spiritual and folk magic traditions with a focus on the power of positive thought. The first half of the book provides magical and spiritual instruction, while the second half consists of Sister Karol's personal book of spells and rituals, derived mainly from Catholic folk magic, but also from Buddhist, Jewish, Native American, and Wiccan influences.

Abracadabra and Blessed Be!
You might be wondering how a nun got interested in spells and magic. You might also be surprised to learn that it happened quite naturally, fitting perfectly into everything that I learned and believed in, growing up Catholic. I was born and raised believing in God, angels, saints—a spirit filled world in which we had the ability to talk to them, ask for whatever we needed, and sense a divine presence with us wherever we were. At Saint Stanislaus Grade School in East Chicago, Indiana, we attended Mass every morning before class, where we watched a priest transform bread and wine (in the mysterious language of Latin) into the body and blood of Christ. Abracadabra. Catholic magic. I grew up thinking if bread and wine could be transformed into something divine, so could the rest of creation. The holiness in all creation can be found in those who have eyes to see what they believe.

Guidance for Living Your Best Magical and Spiritual Life:

Magic of Ritual
The magic of ritual, like the call to pray, is and is not as mysterious as it sounds. When something we want to happen becomes real, that’s magic. Something we envision becomes true. The invisible is made visible. Yet getting what we want often times doesn’t seem to be nearly as mysterious as how it happened, how we got what we prayed for, how the magic in ritual works. We know what it looks like. Through a friend of a friend, a stranger, or some coincidence, a prayer is answered. Obstacles are removed and our wish is granted.

Belief
Everything I know and believe about the power in prayer and the magic in ritual comes from what I was told as a child about Santa Claus and what I found true as an adult in Christian scripture: If you don’t believe, you don’t receive. Thoughts, desires, wishes, and prayers are powerful tools in the life of the spirit, and what makes magic work more than anything else is the divine power in faith. Believing is the source and center of all spiritual life, the air holy spirits breathe, the stuff of divine intervention. We are what we believe.

Necessity
When it comes to focusing the power in prayer, we only need to look at our life. Pressure points, sore spots, places of greatest tension—all hold the divine power in necessity. There is a sense of soulful urgency in times of necessity, those times when we cry out for mercy, cling to hope, the point of pleading and begging when we cry out with the Psalmist “How long, O God, how long?” The more urgent and intense the need, the more highly charged it is with divine energy.

Candle-Lighting Wish-Come-True Spell
The act of lighting a candle and making a wish is a spell and blessing all by itself. It’s also a powerful way to pray when that’s all the time you have. The divine power in fire and the soulful power in heartfelt wishes make this simple spell work like magic. Nature and necessity always make magic whenever we light a candle and make a wish. So whenever you hear even the faintest call to pray, light a candle and make a wish. And never light a candle, for whatever purpose, without dedicating it to someone or something, even if it’s a two-word prayer of “thank you” to the deities who hear our call and appear every time we light a candle. In a similar manner, never extinguish a candle without confirming your wish with “Amen” or “Blessed be.” Keep in mind every time you light a candle and make a wish you are taking part in divine activity. Deities appear to hear your prayer. You are making candle-lighting magic.

There is no day that I do not hear the Voice.” – Joan of Arc
This book is about prayer and how important ritual becomes at certain times in our lives. Those who’ve grown up in ancient religious traditions - Judaism, Pre-Christian, Catholicism, Buddhism, Islam—know instinctively the powerful way ritual prayer blesses every moment of every day. At its very best, religion teaches us to revere everything as holy, just the way it is. Even those who are decidedly not religious in the traditional sense occasionally feel the need for divine intervention, blessing, and inspiration, especially in life’s most profound turning points like birth, marriage, sickness, and death. They too believe in the power of prayer to help good things happen, bring comfort in times of sorrow, enlighten next steps when we feel lost and confused.

Publisher: Llewellyn Publications (April 8, 2019)

A Guided Tour through the Untamed Territories of Magic

Book 1 of the Great Wizards of History Trilogy

The history of wizardry comes alive with dozens of unique portraits capturing the most remarkable and infamous practitioners of magic and alchemy. Combining up-to-date historical scholarship and his own keen interpretations of primary texts, Guy Ogilvy develops a fascinating saga of magical thought and its inevitable dance with orthodox rationalism.

Discover the unparalleled influence of Pythagoras and the pre-Socratics as they experience the mysterious glories of Apollo's touch. Behold the leading alchemists of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as they carry forth the surviving wisdom of the ancients, working their unique magic even as powerful social and political forces align against them.
