JANUS
By Loudon Dodd - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=7404342

In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/; Latin: Ianus, pronounced [ˈjaː.nus]) is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. It is conventionally thought that the month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius), but according to ancient Roman farmers' almanacs, Juno was the tutelary deity of the month.

THE TAPER THAT LIGHTS THE WAY:
Robert Cochrane's Letters Revealed
By Shani Oates , Robert Cochrane
Hardcover: 476 pages
Publisher: Mandrake of Oxford (June 21, 2016)
List Price: $35.00

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
"Those that speak of secret and secrecy, and not of discretion or wisdom, are those who have not discovered Truth."

Subject to continual speculation and study, the enigmatic words of this erstwhile poet have touched the Craft, influencing all called to it, irrespective of their path or journeying. Such was his genius, such was his unique gift, ever the barb of fate, he was beyond his era. His legacy has enriched the tone of all seekers and all pilgrims who would cast aside the veil of illusion in favour of the 'Real.' For the first time, his own Clan are able to offer clarification on the mystery of his Faith through his evolving Craft, begun officially at the onset of the decade that witnessed his tragic death. Finally, through the gift of several early letters, now brought together with those already published, their message is consciously revealed. Under a carefully constructed chronology, this is 'his' story, unfurled through his words and works.

As the 'Order of the Sun, ' his People of Goda, of the Clan of Tubal Cain, we continue to hold aloft his brave taper, that for the 'Hound' and 'Pale Guiden, ' in the Great Hall of Caer Ochran, is 'worth a light!'

IFÁ:
A Forest of Mystery
By Nicholaj De Mattos Frisvold
Bibliothèque Rouge paperback edition
400 pages, 18 original pen & ink illustrations by Childerico
Publisher: Scarlet Imprint
List Price: $29.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Ifá: A Forest of Mystery by Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold is a major study on the cosmology, metaphysics, philosophy and divination system of Ifá, written by a tradition holder and member of the council of elders, known as the Ogboni society, of Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Ifá – an alternative name for its prophet Òrúnmìlà – is a religion, a wisdom tradition and a system of divination encoding the rich and complex oral and material culture of the Yoruba people. The Yoruba culture is grounded in memory, an ancestral repository of wisdom, that generates good counsel, advises appropriate ebo (sacrifice) and opens the way to develop a good character on our journey through life and in our interactions with the visible and invisible worlds.

The work is a presentation of the first sixteen odù of the Ifá corpus of divination verses explained in stories, allegories and proverbs reflecting the practical wisdom of Ifá. The work is both a presentation of Ifá for those with little knowledge of it, and a dynamic presentation of the wealth of its wisdom for those already familiar with Ifá. The deities and key concepts of Ifá metaphysics are discussed, including: Obàtálá, Ònilé, Sàngó, Ògún, Oya, Òsányìn, Yemoja, Èsù, àse (power), egúngún (ancestry), ìwà (character), and orí (head/consciousness/daimon). Notably, Dr Frisvold has created a work which celebrates the Yoruba wisdom tradition and makes a bridge with the Western world. It is of value for the light that it casts on the origins and mysteries of Èsù and òrìsà, and an important source for those practicing Quimbanda, Palo, Santeria, Vodou and the African Diaspora religions. Yet its lessons are universal, for it is the art of developing character, of attracting good fortune and accruing wisdom in life. As Nicholaj writes:

‘…Ifá is a philosophy, a theogony, theology and cosmology rooted in a particular metaphysic that concerns itself with the real and the ideal, the world and its beginning. It is rooted in the constitution of man and the purpose of life and the nature of fate. Ifá is a philosophy of character. The philosophy of Ifá lies at the root of any religious cult or organization involving the veneration of òrìsà. […] Through stories and legends, divinatory verses and proverbs, this philosophy will be revealed piece by piece until the landscape has been laid open before you… ’

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

The only deck of the 15th century Tarot arrived to our days complete with all 78 cards.

The first deck alchemy of history.

The deck, four centuries later, inspired the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot .

All cards are illustrated, for the first time in history, with dynamic characters.

The 22 Triumphs depicting heroic leaders of ancient greek-Roman and in two, cases, the history of biblical: Nenbroto (Nimrod) and Nabuchodenasor (Nebuchadnezzar).

The Court Cards and Numerali show scenes of everyday life, fantasy images and allegories alchemical.

The symbols are slightly different from the traditional ones: Of Risks instead of Coins, Bats instead of Sticks; Amphorae instead of Cups. The Spade remain Lamps.

The Sola-Busca Tarot remained for nearly 420 years in a private collection, as long as the Italian state in 2008 bought the deck and in storage assigned to the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, where in 2012 he was made a stunning display. In 1908 the English esotericist Arthur Edward Waite was inspired by the Sola-Busca Tarot to create the Rider-Waite Tarot painted by Pamela Colman Smith.

*Note the new Sola Busca book written by Cristina Dorsini & Morena Poltronieri,
Hand-crafted Box by Osvaldo Menegazzi
List Price: $87.50

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
By meticulously recreating this deck Osvaldo Menegazzi hopes to give the Tarot historian, researcher and collector an authentic experience both tactually and visually. The size, cardstock, coloring and even the back of the cards is remarkably similar to the deck created in 1491 during the Italian Renaissance.

Morena Poltronieri, director of Museo dei Tarocchi (Tarot Museum) who has seen both versions; the original cards and Osvaldo's reproduction shares this: It's incredible...I looked at the originals and there is no difference at all between these two decks! That is the genius of Osvaldo! You could probably have it tested for smell too. A work of art, a masterpiece!

il Meneghello was granted the sole permission to reprint this deck directly from the original cards by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and Pinacoteca di Brera (where it is housed) and that makes this version unique in the world.

It is important to note that Sola Busca does not follow the same card meanings as traditional Major Arcana Tarot. Most of the Trumps are inspired by Roman mythology with a couple cards based on biblical sources. Each card has alchemical symbology, numismatics, and classical historical references.

This deck is considered the oldest complete 78 card deck of the Renaissance era, however this publication focuses solely on the Major Arcana. Sola Busca is also the oldest deck in which imaginative scenes grace each card (not only the Major Arcana but also the pip or ‘numbered’ cards) and it is believed Pamela Coleman Smith studied it while creating the Waite-Smith Tarot cards for Arthur Edward Waite (centuries later, around 1909.)

"This new Sola Busca book in English, offers details on the historical characters & backgrounds associated with each of the 22 Major Arcana as well as symbolic details pertaining to the alchemical symbols & nuances found in these cards. A new theory is posed about who the actual artist of this deck may have been with facts & details supporting the hypothesis and other interesting commentary pertaining to the Sola Busca Tarot and Renaissance era in which it was created."

MINCHIATE FIORENTINE (FLORENCE), 1850
97 Full Color, (originally) Hand Painted Cards
By Osvaldo Menegazzi
This is a Limited Print of 1500
Card size: 3 3/4'' x 2 1/4 inches, 9.53 x 5.72 cm.
Publisher: Il Meneghello
Price: $32.95

These beautiful cards have an old world look and feel to them and are made of sturdy card stock (matte). The original etchings were painted by hand. There are astrological cards along with other Tarot related archetypal images for the Majors and the Minors have symbols on the cards.

Tom Tadford Little notes: ''Minchiate was a very popular game, eventually supplanting the 78-card tarot not only in Florence, but throughout most of Italy.... it continued to be played in Genoa until the 1930s. Like other Italian regional tarots, the Minchiate of Florence celebrates civic pride. The graceful, artistic designs recall the role of Florence as the center of Renaissance art...''

Minchiate is an expansion of Tarot that most likely dates back to the sixteenth century. It came into being a hundred years or so later than the origin of Tarot (which is estimated to be around 1450, in Milan). Minchiate differs from the typical Tarot deck by having 41 Major Arcana cards rather than 22. Like the Tarot, there are 56 Minor Arcana (16 Court cards, and 40 Pips) , making a total of 97 cards in the deck.

The Minchiate adds the remainder of the virtues (Prudence, Faith, Hope, and Charity), the zodiac signs, the four elements and the Grand Duke to the Major Arcana. The Emperor has been replaced by a Western Emperor and an Eastern Emperor. And the High Priestess, Empress and Pope have been replaced, or perhaps renamed.

My readings tend to be commonsensical, geared toward helping the client deal with issues and obstacles to wholeness in a way that brings a sense of self-empowerment.
