FROM THE PUBLISHER:
What is the Infernal Dictionary?

The Infernal Dictionary (original title Dictionnaire Infernal) is a 19th-century encyclopedic work that covers a wide range of topics including the occult, demonology, witchcraft, monsters, religion and popular mythology of the day.

Originally written in French, the most popular printing was the 6th Edition of 1863. This edition was the first to include hundreds of illustrations, including 69 by Louis Le Breton depicting many of the demons described in the book.

Our new Deluxe Edition includes our English translation of the complete work, including digitally enhanced reproductions of the original black and white artwork. Our translation also includes:

  • new full-color modern artwork depicting many of the demons in the book,
  • translations of the author's footnotes (with additional footnotes added by the translation team),
  • a French-English translation table for article titles,
  • introductions from prior editions
  • a newly added index

The Deluxe Edition comes as a two-volume box set bound in real or imitation leather.

They've been translated into English many times, most familiarly by the Neo-Classicist Thomas Taylor in 1792. Sara Mastros’s stunning new translations render them in modern English in rhymed couplets suitable for both oration and singing. Orphic Hymns Grimoire is a guide ...
