THE BOOK OF ENGLISH MAGIC
Author: Philip Carr-Gomm & Richard Heygate
Publisher: Overlook Press (US edition)
Publication date:June 2009 - October 2010 (USA)
List Price: $35.00

BOOK BLURB:
The image of the magician is exciting and tantalising, and familiar to us all. Think of Merlin or Gandalf and we think of excitement, mystery and adventure. But what do we feel or even know about real magicians – those figures who throughout history have practiced the kind of magic that for centuries was a forbidden art?

For reasons that will become clear as the 562 page The Book of English Magic unfolds, England has fostered the greatest variety of magicians in all the world, including not only the delightfully eccentric, but also figures who have played significant roles in the development of the arts and sciences.

Secretly we would all probably like to know a magician, or perhaps be one. And – extraordinary as it may seem – there has never been a greater opportunity to fulfil either of these ambitions, since there are now more practising wizards in England than at any other time in her history. Some will see this as an example of the triumph of irrationalism, others as evidence of a rebirth in an understanding of the world that is only now being touched upon by the most advanced physicists and cosmologists.

Whatever your beliefs about magic, this book is designed to introduce you to some of the most interesting contemporary practitioners of magic, and to many of the most important figures in the magical world of previous centuries. And to help you begin experiencing for yourself the world of magic and enchantment that has succeeded in intriguing generations of seekers, this comprehensive survey of English magic includes a rich menu of magical things to do and places to visit.

Co-author Sir Richard Heygate runs a successful software company and has a special interest in alternative worlds. He is also co-author of Endangered Species.

BOOK OF THE EXPLANATION OF THE SYMBOLS KITAB HALL AR-RUMUZ (v. 1A)
By Muhammad ibn Umail
Psychological Commentary by Marie-Louise von Franz

Publisher: Daimon Verlag; 1 edition (January 30, 2008)
Language: English
Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 6.1 x 0.9 inches
List Price: $37.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
This is the last manuscript of Dr Marie-Louise von Franz, dictated during the final years of her life. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Marie-Louise von Franz worked with C.G.Jung from 1934 until his death in 1961. She was a scholar of Medieval Latin and classical Greek, and her field of collaboration with Jung was the study of alchemy. CORPUS ALCHEMICUM
ARABICUM VOL. 1B
By Muhammas ibn Umail
(CALA1 B): Book of the Explanation of the Symbols
(Corpus Alchemicum Arabicum (CALA))
Psychological Commentary by Theodor Abt

Hardcover: 400 pages
Publisher: Daimon Verlag (February 25, 2010)
Language: English
Product Dimensions: 9.1 x 6.1 x 1.4 inches
List Price: $90.00

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
This second commentary on Muhammed ibn Umail's Hall ar-rumuz (See CALA I) gives important additions and clarifications that had become possible in the light of other texts of Ibn Umail and authors quoted by him, which at the time when Dr. von Franz wrote her first commentary (see CALA I A), were either poorly translated into Latin or not yet available in any European language. That allowed an enlarged understanding of this text, based on Ibn Umail's own reflections. The text is accompanied by one hundred illustrations that help the reader better to understand the symbolic world of Ibn Umail.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Theodor Abt has a Ph.D. from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, and has served on the board of the C. G. Jung Institute, Zurich. He has been in private practice as a Jungian Analyst since 1975 and since 1990 has been the Professor for Rural Sociology at the ETH. He is a member of the board of the Research and Training Centre for Depth Psychology according to C. G. Jung and M.-L. von Franz, Zurich, since 1995, and has been president of the Society of the Friends of the Royal Tombs of Egypt since 1988. His research focuses on the relationship of the outer world with the needs of the inner unconscious world.

ECOMYSTICISM:
THE PROFOUND EXPERIENCE OF NATURE AS SPIRITUAL GUIDE
Carl von Essen M.D.

Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Bear & Company; New Edition of The Hunter's Trance edition (October 19, 2010)
Language: English
Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 5.9 x 1 inches
List Price: $18.00

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Explores the philosophy, science, and spirituality of nature mysticism and its Green calling

• Offers a solid bridge between spiritual practice and environmental activism

• Reveals how we can heal the environment by renewing our connection to it

• Shows how spiritual encounters in nature are healing the Nature Deficit Disorder of our psyches and bodies

Many have been struck by a majestic moment in nature--a sole illuminated flower in a shady grove, an owl swooping silently across a wooded path, or an infinitely starry sky--and found themselves in a state of expanded awareness so profound they can feel the interconnectedness of all life. These trance-like moments of clarity, unity, and wonder often incite a call to protect and preserve the earth--to support Nature as she supports us. Termed “nature mysticism,” people from all cultures have described such experiences. However, the ever-increasing urbanization of the world’s population is threatening this ancient connection as well as the earth itself.

In Ecomysticism, Carl von Essen explores nature mysticism through the recorded experiences of outdoor enthusiasts as well as scientific studies in biology, psychology, and neuroscience. Citing consciousness scholar William James and a variety of well-known nature lovers such as Ansel Adams, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, von Essen shows how the spiritual transcendence from an encounter in nature--like other mystical experiences--is healing the Nature Deficit Disorder of our psyches and bodies, leading to an expansion of our worldview and a clearer understanding of our self and of our natural world. Offering a solid bridge between spiritual practice and environmental activism, von Essen’s spiritual ecology reveals how only through a renewal of humanity’s spiritual connection to nature can we effect true environmental healing.

WORMWOOD STAR:
THE MAGICKAL LIFE OF MARJORIE CAMERON
by Spencer Kansa

Paperback: 282 pages
Publisher: Mandrake (January 1, 2011)
Language: English
Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 6 x 0.8 inches
List Price:$24.00

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
In the first ever biography written about her, "Wormwood Star" traces the extraordinary life of the enigmatic artist Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995), one of the most fascinating figures to emerge from the American Underground art world and film scene. Illuminating her early childhood and wartime experiences, the book also offers a fresh perspective on her role in the infamous Babalon Working magick rituals, that were conducted by her husband, the maverick rocket scientist and Aleister Crowley disciple, Jack Parsons, and the future founder of Scientology, L Ron Hubbard. Following Parsons death in 1952 from a chemical explosion, Cameron inherited her husband's magickal mantle and embarked on a lifelong spiritual quest, a journey reflected in the otherworldly images she depicted, many of them drawn from the Elemental Kingdom and astral plane. As well as her artistry, the biography also takes an in-depth look at Cameron's film appearances, and features reminisces from the many artists, poets and movie star friends she inspired along the way. With so much of her life and work shrouded in mystery, "Wormwood Star" sheds new light on this most remarkable artist and elusive occult icon. This book chronicles the fascinating life of a most extraordinary artist and occult icon.

CALENDAR: SPECIAL EVENTS

DECEMBER 1st 7-8:30 PM:
FUNDRAISER FOR THE BARDS OF CAER PUGETIA

It's that time once again, and the Bards of Caer Pugetia are having a fundraiser to ensure our 2011 park fees can be paid. As you know, all of our Gorsedds take place in beautiful Seattle public parks including Gasworks Park, Lincoln Park and Volunteer Park. To do this, every year we pay anywhere from $200 to $500.00 or more in Seattle Public Park Fee's. Paying these fee's ensures that we
obtain a permit to gather and celebrate, and reserves the space for our Gorsedds.

This year, our fundraiser will be a silent auction. There will be some food, great company and perhaps a bit of spontaneous bardic performance. Many wonderful items have already been donated. Here is just a brief list to wet your appetite:

Celtic Tree Oracle in box with beautiful handmade ogham runestaves (runestaves made by Karl Feret of Rare Earth Designs http://rareearthdesigns.net )

Druid Plant Oracle by Philip & Stephanie Carr-Gomm along with the companion Druid Animal Oracle - new in box!

Beautiful real emerald necklace (choker length) and matching earrings – imported from India

..and more!

If you have something to donate, please contact caerpugetia1@hotmail.com.

The fundraiser will take place in the basement room at

Edge of The Circle Books
on Wednesday, December 1, 2010
from 7:00 - 8:30 pm.

Come and support this Gorsedd of bards! Many thanks one and all.

Thanks bunches for your help.

TAROT READINGS / SPIRITUAL ADVICE

UNCOMMONSENSE TAROT
Tarot readings by Erica (Raven) Branch-Butler

“ I've been reading Tarot for more than thirty years, and reading professionally at the Edge for nearly a decade. My belief is that Tarot is best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious, allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for the better. My readings tend to be rather commonsensical (hence the name) and are geared toward helping the client circumvent the often self-imposed obstacles in their lives, so that they can achieve their goals and fully enjoy the fruits that life has to bring.”

Please inquire about Tarot Parties, classes and other events.
Available every day except THURSDAYS-- 12:30-8.30PM.
Sundays 12:30-8:30 PM

*
TAROT BY COMPASS
Every THURSDAY from 12:30-8:30 PM

“I've been reading cards for 20 years and doing readings professionally for nine. I've been reading cards at folk life and Bumbershoot for nine years along with various fairs and festivals on the west coast.

I believe the tarot works as an interpersonal growth tool that on some levels works like the childhood game of "broken telephone." Everyone of the 78cards in a tarot deck have a central meaning. Depending on where they fall in a spread, how they are dignified, and any colloquial non-sequiturs that happen to come out of my mouth create a personalized story of what's going on in ones life. The cards are great about "speaking" of the past and present. They can pick up on energies that are starting to manifest in ones life but ultimately after a reading is over everyone has free will and it is their choice how they deal with those energies. My job as a reader is multifaceted, from channel to help alleviate blocks; to sounding board as a listener. I've found that I get a wonderful thankful response from people I've given readings to.”

This concludes our Newsletter for this month.
Look for us again JANUARY 1st 2011!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Sincerely,
Raven
