WHAT WE
KNEW IN THE NIGHT:
Reawakening
the Heart of Witchcraft
by
Raven Grimassi, Deidra Catero (Illustrator)
Paperback:
272 pages
Publisher:
Weiser Books (September 1, 2019)
List Price:
$21.95
FROM THE
PUBLISHER:
Explores
the roots of witchcraft while providing an integrated magical system
to serve the modern witch
Raven
Grimassi is among the pioneering authors of the modern witchcraft
renaissance. In What We Knew in the Night, he presents a cohesive and
complete system of witchcraft based on traditional sources. The
author’s premise is that, beginning in the 1980s, with the rise of
modern metaphysical publishing, authors began presenting very
personal witchcraft practices. In the process, traditional and
formerly well-established practices fell into obscurity, which
potentially lead to confusion.
What We
Knew in the Night uncovers and clarifies those buried gems for a new
generation, assembling and integrating key components of witchcraft,
past and present. Grimassi lays out key mystical and practical
foundations of witchcraft and restores their important role.
Sharing
lessons and advice from his own almost 50 years of personal study and
practice, Grimassi explores what he describes as the “heart of the
old rites.” He also offers practical instructions and a clear
5-step process of empowerment―one chapter for each step ―for
anyone who wants to walk the path of witchcraft:
- Virtue of the Moon
- The Wafting
- The Witch’s Blade
- The Clay Pentacle
- The Witch’s Ring
Having
accomplished these steps, the reader will possess the “quintessence
of witchery” and be firmly grounded in the arcane art of
witchcraft.
The
Arcane Art of Witchcraft
During
the 1960s and ’70s, learning about Witchcraft was a matter of being
introduced to others, or being brought into some form of contact with
others. Most memorable are the times I was driven by friends to meet
a long-practicing Witch. Looking back today, I don’t think the
majority of these people were actually Witches in the common sense.
However, I believe that some of them were—particularly those who
moved here from places like Romania, Hungary, Poland, Germany, and
Italy.
One of
the goals of this book is to pass on the things we once passed to one
another back in those days. As Witches, this was what we knew in the
night. We were taught the ways as we stood in candlelit circles,
knelt in the forest beneath the full moon, and meditated in the
“astral temple” of tradition. In the final analysis, all of this
opened the way to gaining a personal gnosis when we bathed in the
light of the full moon and communed with the same spirits who once
taught our ancestors.

A practical
guide for bringing magic into your life using plants and herbs, the
seasons, and the natural elements
A “wild
witch” is someone who has discovered the true source of magic. She
finds her magic in the elements of the earth, the ways of healing
herbs and scented flowers, the ocean’s tides, the cycle of the

nature, a wild witch comes to see the living spirits in all
things—everything is alive. She learns that these spirits must be
honored and then they will act as trustworthy guides. In essence a

- Herbs, plants, and trees
- The element of fire through candle magic and spell casting
- The hidden spirit of water through purification, dosing, and scrying

by publishing The Magic of Herbs very early in his adult life.
