Old-style
Craft, also known as traditional witchcraft, endures as a distinct
body of archaic magical practices in present-day Britain, North
America and Australia. Originally nameless, such bodies are related
to a variety of historical magical streams, most notably the
practices of the Grimoires or ‘black books’, folk-healing, and
popular magic of the early modern era. Typically, such groups operate
in secret, with strict means of initiatic succession, and practice
sorcery characterized by a dual ethos of healing and harming. Though
an internally contentious issue, the word witch is accepted as a
descriptor for practitioners of this art, as is anti-witching for
practices of removing curses and binding magical malefactors.
Though
still obscure, even in occult circles, the variety and idiosyncrasy
of Old Craft traditions is remarkable. The witches of Cornwall, with
their corpora of folk charms and blessings, are one such phenotype.
The Pickingill Craft as described by E.W. Liddell, remains despite
its controversy one of the most unique and potent Craft persuasions,
as do the teachings and practices of Robert Cochrane, founder of Clan
of Tubal Cain. The Manx Old Order, the Skull and Bones tradition of
Pennsylvania, and the Cultus Sabbati, with the medieval Witches'
Sabbath as an important organizing principle, are yet other
distinctive traditions.
Hands
of Apostasy is a groundbreaking witchcraft anthology presenting
nineteen articles written by both scholars and practitioners,
addressing such crucial Old Craft topics the Devil, Initiation, the
relation of witchcraft to the grimoire corpus, the mysticism and
magic of herbs, folk-charming, the nocturnal flight, the Romantic
movement, the witches’ cauldron, and the powers of moon and tide.
Representing widely-varying witchcraft traditions and perspectives,
the book is a sound testament to the Craft’s history, diversity and
strength, as well as the characteristic marks of an evolving and
contemplative tradition. A complete list of essays and authors is
found at right.
The
work is profusely illustrated with a specially-commissioned set of
illustrations by renowned Finnish engraver Timo Ketola, pleasing both
sensus and spiritus. In his darkly opulent style evocative of
nocturnal tableaux and forlorn landscapes, Mar. Ketola’s work for
Hands of Apostasy is a stunningly original addition to the
iconography of the witch. In conjunction with the book release we are
also offering a limited edition print of Timo Ketola’s LUCIFER.

In
this concise and important treatise Michael Howard delineates between
various modern neo-pagan Wiccan traditions, cunning folk traditions,
heathen folk or the 'pagani, ' and an assortment of ritual magicians
and pathworkers in order to present a 'gramarye' distinctly for those
who aspire to the 'Old Craft.' An experienced practitioner, writer,
researcher, folklorist and magazine editor of the respected
witchcraft magazine, The Cauldron (since 1976), Howard elucidates
important elements of the Traditional Craft, including preparation
rituals, tools of 'the Arte, ' fellowship of the coven and the
casting of circles, finally taking us through the Great Wheel of the
Year and the assortment of sacred rites as performed within. The
seasonal rituals are based on traditional witchcraft and folklore
sources and have been specially written for this book.

The portable edition of The
Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic, by Israel Regardie, edited with
a Foreword by David Cherubim. There is new material in the book by
Israel Regardie from the archives of the Israel Regardie Foundation,
as well as material by Chic and Tabatha Cicero, Lon Milo DuQuette,
Jack Willis and S. Jason Black. The Complete Golden Dawn System of
Magic was Israel Regardie's last book, his Magnum Opus, and the final
token of his True Will. Through this book he bequeathed to us the
means to carry on the Great Work of the Golden Dawn.
MORE
FROM THE PUBLISHER:
"Without
Regardie, the Golden Dawn would have perished in the flames of
history." —David Cherubim, Israel Regardie Foundation
"As
a writer, Regardie has long been hailed as one of the most coherent
proponents of Western magic. His work is refreshingly humble and
honest: he is able to convey difficult, abstract concepts with
clarity and openness to inquiry. Never one to talk down to readers,
he focuses instead on the patient teaching of esoteric knowledge: his
warm style coaxes readers toward further investigation. He invites
the reader to join him in the journey on the Path of Light. And it
was through Regardie s writings that we began our own Rosicrucian
adventure." —Chic and Tabatha Cicero
Israel
Regardie (1907-1985) was an Adept of the Golden Dawn and he was one
of the greatest exponents of the Western Esoteric Tradition of the
20th century. He was also an initiate of Aleister Crowley's Order of
the A.·. A.·., and he was a IXth degree initiate of Crowley's
O.T.O. It was his aim to preserve the teachings and work of the
Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. His success in this task has
profoundly influenced occult thought. From the age of 20, Regardie
worked as Crowley's personal secretary. During this period, until
their bitter parting, Regardie was one of the few who knew Crowley
well. He was one of the few who were qualified to provide first-hand,
personal insight into the character and personality of one of the
major figures in Western Magick. In addition to his extensive
writings, Regardie practiced as a chiropractor and as a neo-Reichian
therapist. He taught Psychiatry at the Los Angeles College of
Chiropractic and contributed articles to many Psychology magazines.
David
Cherubim, who contributed a Foreword to this book, is a modern-day
Adept of the Golden Dawn who was initiated by the late Christopher S.
Hyatt on March 10th, 1990, five years after Regardie’s death (March
10th, 1985), to carry on Regardie's lineage to Aleister Crowley and
the Golden Dawn. David Cherubim is also a musician, author and editor
who has edited and contributed material to some of our best and most
popular titles.

LILLY:
The
Last Magician, Adept & Astrologer

Peter Stockinger (Author), Sue Ward (Author), David Conway
(Foreword)
Paperback:

THE PUBLISHER:
Born
less than a year before the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603,
William Lilly lived during one of the most turbulent times in English
history. Like so many of his generation, he had to deal with the
plague, was drawn into the madness of the English Civil War and was
forced to take sides, and witnessed the regicide of King Charles I.
Lilly lived in a time of enormous religious and social upheaval, but
his astrology remained the outer expression of a magical world-view,
based on hermetic and neo-Platonic principles and rooted in the 16th
century.
This
book provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the world of
William Lilly, the famous 17th century astrologer and magician. It
brings together transcripts of his autobiography and of some of his
most important works. It also includes Peter Stockinger and Sue
Ward's Monster of Ingratitude, an investigative journey offering new
insights into the notorious contention between Lilly and the
astrologer John Gadbury.
Amongst
other valuable information, the book contains: · The Life of William
Lilly, Student in Astrology Transcribed from the autograph, with
annotations, commentaries and biographical notes, including Elias
Ashmole's addenda. Nativities of some notable persons appended. ·
The Nativity of Sir William Wittypoole Transcript of a nativity,
rectified and directed by William Lilly, a previously unpublished
manuscript providing the reader with an exciting insight into the
working methods of the master astrologer. · Monster of Ingratitude
This research contains brief biographies of Lilly and Gadbury. It
shows how their enmity began, developed and ended, including details
of the rather one-sided pamphlet war. An in-depth study of published
material, time-lines and bibliographic entries of all primary sources
used are also included and provide the grounds for a different
explanation from that commonly proposed.

German Stargazer's Book of Astrology is the first English translation

offers the English reader an exciting insight into the working
methods of a 16th century astrologer living on the cusp of the Late
Medieval and Early Modern periods. The book contains a detailed
introduction by the translator, providing valuable background
information and historical context, and is comprehensively annotated
throughout.
The
translation contains, amongst many others, the following chapters:

In
April of 1736, François Chosson of Marseille printed what was to
later become the prototype for subsequent tarot decks, including
Nicolas Conver’s wood block deck, the model for most popular Tarot
de Marseille decks enjoyed today. The original copy of this 1736
Chosson deck was sold to the Historical Museum Blumenstein in
Solothurn, Switzerland. Thanks to the efforts of researcher Yves
Reynaud and graphic designer Wilfried Houdouin, both of Marseille,
this historical tarot deck is presented as a faithful facsimile. Its
original packaging has been reproduced for this Limited Edition
printing of 3000 hand-numbered decks.
Wilfried
Houdouin is a professional graphic designer who has
lived in
Marseille, France since 2001. Fascinated by the Tarot of Marseilles
since childhood, he has passionately pursued the study, practice
and teaching
of the historic deck for decades. He studied graphic
arts in Paris at
the end of the 80s, and trained in computer
graphics in the mid 90s. In 2011 he created the Tarot of Marseilles
Millennium Edition, and wrote The Sacred Code of the Tarot.
Yves
Reynaud combines his work as a maritime inspector in Marseilles,
France with a deep interest in esotericism, with Astrology,
numerology and graphology. He fell in love with the Tarot of
Marseille
in his youth. Since 2004, he has concentrated on the
historic tarot decks, which he fervently collects. He has researched
the iconography, genealogy and history of the Tarot of Marseilles,
its engravers and master card makers.
Along with Wilfried
Houdouin, he realized the importance of the
initiatory and
cultural legacy of the Tarot of Marseilles. Aware of the rarity of
the preserved copies, together they decided to create Tarot of
Marseilles Heritage, producing a brand new growing collection of
facsimiles of the most beautiful historical Tarots of Marseilles,
republished with utmost respect for the original editions.

We
passed the halfway point in our Tarot class last week, and now we’re
loving the energy flow as we share the insights from our weekly
spreads. What a fantastic experience for all of us! The more people
that share in this experience, the more enlightening it is for all of
us. It isn’t too late – you won’t be behind, Each week is a
new and exciting growth experience, whether we have been here from
the start or are new to this group. So, come and join in the magic!
My
name is Kathy Eckert, and I have the honor of working with this great
group of people! I’d love to hear from you, if you want to email
me at kathytom@live.com, but
advance registration is not really necessary. Anyone is welcome to
drop in for one session, some, or all of them.
We
meet weekly in the downstairs room at Edge of the Circle bookstore,
Tuesdays,
6:45 – 8:45 PM. The weekly cost for this class is $7.00 per
session.
The
beauty of an intuitive approach is in the applicability of the course
to everyone, whether you’re new to Tarot or a long-time enthusiast.
This class is casual and curious. Join us for a week or two or for
the rest of the course, which will wrap up in early December.
As
we look at the numerological significance of the cards, we also apply
that knowledge in spreads. So far, those spreads have been mostly
about ourselves. Soon, though, we’ll be learning to apply our
Tarot knowledge to reading for others. We’re learning already that
human contact is the greatest gift of the Tarot!
Hope
to see you soon!

UNCOMMONSENSE
TAROT
Tarot
readings by Erica (Raven) Branch-Butler
"I've
been reading Tarot for more than thirty years, and reading
professionally at the Edge for a decade. My belief is that Tarot is
best used for putting you in touch with your own subconscious,
allowing you to make healthy decisions that can change your life for
the better. My readings tend to be rather commonsensical. They are
often geared toward helping the client deal with the often
self-imposed obstacles in their lives in a healthy, self –affirming
way, so that they can achieve their goals and fully enjoy the fruits
that life has to bring."
Please
inquire about Tarot Parties, classes and other events.
Available
