THE MAGICKAL ESSENCE OF ALEISTER CROWLEY
By J. Edward Cornelius
Please call for Price and availability.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Berkeley, CA: Privately published ( J. Edward Cornelius ), 2010. First Edition thus Hardcover. 8vo. x + 246pp. Black cloth with gilt titling to spine, b&w frontis, appendixes, index. New book thus Fine in fine dust jacket.
Edition limited to 777 numbered copies.

"The Magickal Essence of Aleister Crowley" focuses on the central philosophies and practices of Magick, in particular the "attainment of the knowledge and conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel," and the secrets that lie at the heart of Crowley's "Liber Aleph" and "The Book of Lies." The text has its origins in a series of instructions that Aleister Crowley gave to an American disciple, Grady Louis McMurtry, during the last years of the Second World War. McMurtry returned to the United States, and in his later years went on to head both the O.T.O. and his own lineage of the A.'. A.'. He became both friend and mentor to the author of this book, J. Edward Cornelius, to whom he confided the secrets and teachings that he had received from Crowley. Following McMurtry's death, Cornelius explored these insights in a series of "Epistles" that were privately circulated amongst his own students. In 1999, he made a synthesis of these teachings, which he published in the Red Flame series of journals under the title "The Magickal Essence of Aleister Crowley." It sold out rapidly, and soon became one of the most sought after modern explorations of Crowley's work. In the decade that has elapsed since the publication of the original Red Flame edition of the book, Cornelius has carefully reworked the text, removing sections that he no longer felt to be of relevance, clarifying passages that some of his students found difficult or perplexing, and extensively revising and augmenting the rest. In the process he has added fifteen new chapters, effectively reshaping the entire publication, and filling it with new insights for those interested in the Magick of "the Beast."

THE MAGIC SEAL OF DR. JOHN DEE.
THE SIGILLUM DEI AEMETH
by: Colin D. Campbell

Hardcover
Publisher: The Teitan Press; 1st, Limited edition (2009)
Please call for Price and availability.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Hardcover. 8vo. Small Quarto. 156pp. Bound in high quality black cloth, with a gilt sigils stamped on front & rear covers, blind rules, and gilt title etc. on the spine. Printed on acid-free paper, sewn, Color frontispiece and one colour plate, b&w illustrations and tables, appendixes, index. Edition limited to 777 numbered copies.

The book comprises a detailed examination of the history and structure of the Sigillum Dei Aemeth of the Elizabethan scholar and Magus, Dr. John Dee, as well as a study of its use in the practice of ritual magic. The appendixes include a new transcription and translation of Dee's Liber Mysteriorum Secundus, and an important new translation of the section of the famous grimoire, The Sworn Book of Honorius, that gives details of what is clearly an early form of the Sigillum Dei. The author has written that from the perspective of a practicing magician, the work has two principal aims: "to demonstrate the importance of the pattern established by Dee's Sigillum Dei as opposed to its implementation, and to bring the Sigillum Dei out of the limited confines of the Enochian temple and into its role as a powerful magickal system in its own right. The recognition of the patterns established in the construction of the Sigillum Dei allow us to view the seal in a new light, not as a static framework decided once and for all hundreds of years ago in the study of a Rennaissance magician, but as one that can be reconstituted in the light of modern interpretation. Furthermore, the seal is, in essence, a system of evocation - the very same method of communication used by Dee & Kelley in its reception. This book explains the nature and method of this approach and how the practicing magician is able to use the Sigillum Dei in the manner in which it was truly intended - as a powerful system of planetary magick."

SÀNGÓ IN AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
Edited by Joel E. Tishken, Toyin Falola, and Akintunde Akinyemi
Paperback: 376 pages
Publisher: Indiana University Press (June 1, 2009)
List Price: $27.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Sàngó's impact on the Atlantic world:

"From religion, history, and sociology, to culture and literature, this volume appeals to multiple disciplines as Sàngó is interrogated on several levels of complexity." —Niyi Afolabi, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"Elucidates the variety of views in circulation about Sàngó both in Nigeria and in the Yoruba diaspora." —Oyekan Owomoyela, University of Nebraska

Sàngó in Africa and the African Diaspora is a multidisciplinary, transregional exploration of Sàngó religious traditions in West Africa and beyond. Sàngó—the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning—is a powerful, fearful deity who controls the forces of nature, but has not received the same attention as other Yoruba orishas. This volume considers the spread of polytheistic religious traditions from West Africa, the mythic Sàngó, the historical Sàngó, and syncretic traditions of Sàngó worship. Readers with an interest in the Yoruba and their religious cultures will find a diverse, complex, and comprehensive portrait of Sàngó worship in Africa and the African world.

Joel E. Tishken is Assistant Professor of African and World History at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.

Toyin Falola is Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor in History at The University of Texas, Austin. He has edited The Yoruba Diaspora in the Atlantic World (IUP, 2005) and Archaeology of Atlantic Africa and the African Diaspora (IUP, 2007).

Akintunde Akinyemi is Associate Professor of Yoruba Language and Literature in the Department of African and Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He is author of Yoruba Royal Poetry: A Socio-Historical Exposition and Annotated Translation.

FINDING PERSEPHONE:
WOMEN'S RITUALS IN THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN
Edited by Maryline Parca and Angeliki Tzanetou
Paperback: 344 pages
Publisher: Indiana University Press (November 7, 2007)
List Price: $24.95

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Reveals women's active role in religious life and rituals in the ancient world:

"As the excellent introduction makes clear, there are good reasons why the study of women and religion is an exciting topic at this time." —H. Alan Shapiro, Johns Hopkins University

". . . a good representation of the potential of the study of women’s rituals as a medium for relocating women to the center of ancient society from their long relegation at the edge." —Randall S. Howarth

, Mercyhurst College, H-Women, H-Net , January 2009
Drawing upon the latest research in gender studies, history of religion, feminism, ritual theory, performance, anthropology, archaeology, and art history, Finding Persephone investigates the ways in which the religious lives and ritual practices of women in Greek and Roman antiquity helped shape their social and civic identity. Barred from participating in many public arenas, women asserted their presence by performing rituals at festivals and presiding over rites associated with life passages and healing. The essays in this lively and timely volume reveal the central place of women in the religious and ritual practices of the societies of the ancient Mediterranean. Readers interested in religion, women's studies, and classical antiquity will find a unique exploration of the nature and character of women's autonomy within the religious sphere and a full account of women's agency in the public domain.

Maryline Parca teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is author of The Franchetti Collection in Rome: Inscriptions and Sculptural Fragments.

Angeliki Tzanetou teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has published articles on women's rituals and politics in Greek drama.
